Penitentes, or penitentes Nieves ("snow Penitente shaped", in Spanish), is a snow formation found at high altitudes. Penitentes phenomenon only occurs in places between Chile and Argentina, the snow in the high and tapered surfaces that are oriented toward the sun because of the strong wind in the Andes Mountains.
The ice floes are usually cut off from the glacier between brightlingsea 1.5 to 3 meters with a thickness of 5 to 10 feet. More than 4000 meters below freezing, temperatures during the day the sun begins to sublimate the ice (but not melted).
Louis Lliboutry is a French-Chilean glaciologist, geographer and mountaineer Andes. One of his most famous work was broad agreement Nieves y Glaciares de Chile: Fundamentos brightlingsea de glaciologĂa published in 1956.
Lliboutry noted that key climate conditions for differential ablation leading to the formation of dew point penitentes are always below freezing. Thus, the snow will sublimate, because sublimation requires higher energy input than the melting process.
After the differential ablation process begins, the surface geometry of Penitente grown produce positive feedback mechanisms, and the radiation is trapped by multiple reflections between walls. Basin becomes one with the black body radiation, while the wind resulted in a decrease of air saturation, increase brightlingsea the dew point temperature and the initial disbursement. In this way, in which the mass is lost just because of sublimation, will remain, as well as steep walls, which prevent solar heat is minimal. (Bs22)
