Two Southern Ontario snowmobilers had a brush with death last week, prompting the OPP and Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs to issue new warnings about ice safety. A 32-year-old Hanover man and his snowmobile plunged through the ice on Penetanguishene Bay on New Year s Day. Police say the man is extremely lucky to survive plunging into the icy waters without the benefit of a floater snowmobile suit. Two snowmobiles disappeared while travelling across the ice on Jack Lake near Peterborough. No one was injured in either incident. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, ice isn t ready on the Rideau River yet either.
