A collection of images, videos and texts on the history of New York City. About skyscrapers, roads, railways, Islands and people. ccrb hours For suggestions and comments, I am always grateful. Greetings from the skull.
On the July 30, 1916 morning by two clock in the morning of the first world war reached the metropolis of New York and its neighboring town of New Jersey, as on the Black Tom Island in the harbor of New York several ammunition depots went into the air. Cause was not an accident, but an attack which probably German agents had with her hand in the game.
As I reported in September 2009 before briefly about the event, was not so much visual material available today. http://nygeschichte.blogspot.com/2009/09/black-tom-explosion.html
When you hear that ammunition dump exploded on an island in the harbor of New York, opens up not the full extent of this attack. Because the Black Tom Island was located in close proximity to Ellis Iceland (the contact point for immigrants) and Bedloe's Iceland (now Liberty Iceland, the island on which the Statue of Liberty stands). You have to understand that in the 1910s the New Jersey coast something looked different ccrb hours than it is today.
Through land reclamation measures, the shoreline has today been moved further east into the harbor bay. At that time the bank was further west, with an offshore island group called Black Tom Iceland, which had apparently obtained by Landanfüllung have rectangular shapes and were housed at the warehouses.
This excerpt from the complete map shown above illustrates the proximity to Liberty Iceland, here Bedloe Iceland (bottom right) and Ellis Iceland (right above). ccrb hours These two islands will have visited many who have stayed as a tourist in New York.
The second chart below shows that the incident of the explosion also was not too far from Manhattan itself. Whether the storage of large quantities of munitions of war so close to a major city and a busy port for passenger and commercial traffic has been a clever idea about it, one could argue.
About this head could rise to 1916 from inside the Statue of Liberty up into the torch and enjoy from there the view of the harbor bay. Since the Black Tom explosion in which the Statue of Liberty by the way, due to their close properly what abbekam the torch for visitors to the Statue of Liberty is no longer accessible.
